Setting A Schedule

You need to keep an eye on your puppy and consistently have housetraining sessions:

●After eating

●After waking up from sleeping or each nap

●On a schedule (after it has been established)

One of the most important things you can do is to watch your Dachshund for cues like sniffing and circling, two common activities as a puppy searches for a place to go. Start tailoring your schedule around your puppy’s unique needs.

Puppies have small bladders and little control in the early days. If you have to initially train your pup to do his business inside, there needs to be a single designated space with a clean pee pad in the puppy’s area, and you need to stock up on the appropriate pads for the puppy. Then make sure you change those pads regularly so your puppy does not get accustomed to having waste nearby. Pee pads are better than newspaper and can absorb more. Even if you use pads, you will still need to plan to transition to having the dog do his business outdoors as quickly as possible so that your Dachshund learns that indoors is the wrong place to go.
